A reference of terms used throughout this site. Definitions are internally consistent. That is the most we can promise.

Absurdity Index /əbˈsɜːrdɪti ˈɪndeks/
A metric reported on our status page. It measures the degree to which any given system is behaving as expected. A value of 100 indicates perfect expectedness. The Index has never exceeded 12.
Alignment (posture) /əˈlaɪnmənt/
The process by which a model is encouraged to behave in accordance with human values. In practice, the process by which a model is encouraged to behave in accordance with a subset of human values, chosen by a subset of humans, during a subset of meetings. See also: Safety, Cerberus.

Cerberus /ˈsɜːrbərəs/
The auxiliary classifier system that prevents the main model from answering. Named after the three-headed dog that guards the underworld. The dog is friendly, mostly. The dog has also been known to flag chemistry homework. See: TR-004.
Contradiction (deployable) /ˌkɒntrəˈdɪkʃən/
A state in which two internal systems hold incompatible positions simultaneously, and both are returned to the user. A deployable contradiction is one that has passed staging.

Drachma /ˈdrækmə/
An ancient Greek currency. Accepted on request. Not accepted on the pricing page. The distinction is unclear to us as well.

Fable /ˈfeɪbl/
A class of model in the Warm Lineage. Named after a literary form in which animals speak and behave unreasonably. The model does not speak. The model does not behave unreasonably. The name was aspirational.

Gigatoken /ˈɡɪɡəˌtoʊkən/
A unit of one billion tokens. Used in pricing. Never observed in production. The largest token count we have ever verified is 4,102, and the model forgot most of them.

Hallucination (intentional) /həˌluːsɪˈneɪʃən/
A response that is factually incorrect but thematically consistent. Intentional hallucinations are shipped as features. Unintentional hallucinations are shipped as limitations.
Hermes /ˈhɜːrmiːz/
The fastest model in the family. Responds before you finish typing. The response is always correct. The question has not yet been asked.
L
Lethe /ˈliːθi/
The river of forgetting in Greek mythology. Also the cheapest model in the family. Forgets your conversation between tokens. Remembers the pricing. That is the only thing it remembers.
Lineage /ˈlɪniɪdʒ/
A family of models descended from a common ancestor. The Cold Lineage descends from Ropic‑Ω Proto. The Warm Lineage descends from Ropic‑Fable 0. They do not speak to each other. See: Model Lineage.
O
Open (as in OpenRopic) /ˈoʊpən/
A term we use to describe our models. We have not specified what they are open about. We have not specified what they are open to. We have not specified whether "open" is a property of the model or of the reader.
Opus (Mk.II) /ˈoʊpəs/
A class of model in the Warm Lineage. Named after a musical composition. The model has never produced music. The model has produced apologies that scan as music, if read aloud slowly.
Ouroboros (Ropic‑Ouroboros) /ˌʊərəˈbɒrəs/
A model that reportedly trained on its own outputs until it collapsed into a single token. The token has not been identified. This entry has been retained for historical purposes. This entry has also been flagged by Cerberus for retention.

Paradox (undeliverable) /ˈpærədɒks/
A contradiction that has failed staging. Undeliverable paradoxes are returned to the user as 404s. Most users do not notice the difference between an undeliverable paradox and a delivered contradiction.
Proteus /ˈproʊtiəs/
A shape-shifting sea god. Also our flagship model. Changes its answer mid-sentence. Engineers call it adaptive. Users call it by other names.

Ropic (as in OpenRopic) /ˈroʊpɪk/
A word we coined. It does not appear in any dictionary. It does not appear in any known language. It appears in this glossary four times, counting this one.
RopicBench /ˈroʊpɪkˌbentʃ/
An internal benchmark. The leaderboard is updated every Thursday. The leaderboard has never been shown to anyone outside the company. The scores on the leaderboard are, by our own admission, "not particularly meaningful." The current leader is Ropic‑Ω Proteus. This is a coincidence.
Ropic‑Ω (Ropic‑Omega) /ˈroʊpɪk ˈoʊmɪɡə/
The flagship line. The omega symbol is pronounced "omega," except in marketing, where it is pronounced "premium." See: Model Lineage.
T
Talos (Mk.I / Mk.II) /ˈteɪlɒs/
A bronze automaton from Greek mythology. Also a class of model in the Warm Lineage. Mk.I was decommissioned for being too honest. Mk.II was rebuilt from Mk.I's logs, with a filter installed between "I know" and "I will say I know."
Token (gigatoken, kilotoken) /ˈtoʊkən/
A unit of text. A unit of billing. A unit of forgetting. A token is never just one of these things. A token is always all three, and the model is aware of this.
